THE PREDICTION

World number 26 Dan Evans put in one of his best performances since a run to the round of 16 at the US Open back in September with a straight-sets victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the round of 16. The British number two enjoyed his best season on tour in 2021 with a first ATP title won at the Murray River Open in Melbourne as well as a superb defeat of Novak Djokovic to reach the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Another man who made the round of 16 at the US Open for a season’s best Grand Slam finish is 23-year-old Frances Tiafoe, who has been enjoying a rich vein of form over the last few tournaments. The world number 41 recently made the Vienna Open final on an indoor hardcourt like the one in Stockholm with stunning wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Diego Schwartzman and Jannik Sinner before defeat to Alexander Zverev.

The pair share a head-to-head record of 2-2 after Tiafoe levelled things up earlier this season in a three-set win at the Miami Masters. All four of their matches have come in hardcourts, including one win apiece indoors, so this looks a tight call in what should be a brilliant spectacle. Both players to win a set for a total of three sets looks a reasonable outcome here, with both players often capable of taking at least one even in defeat.
