THE LOWDOWN
World number one Novak Djokovic can stay that way for a record-extending seventh time by winning this Paris Masters semi-final against Hubert Hurkacz, with Daniil Medvedev’s chances at usurping him looking unlikely now at least for 2021. 34-year-old Djokovic beat an in-form Taylor Fritz in two tight sets where he looked significantly better than he did against Marton Fucsovics on Tuesday. Djokovic is currently joint-top with Rafael Nadal on 36 Masters titles each and he can go ahead on his own if he manages to win the Paris Masters for a sixth time on Sunday. World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz played out a tight three-set match with in-form James Duckworth on Friday with plenty of nerves setting in. The 24-year-old managed to come through and qualify for the ATP Finals later this month as a debutante in the last remaining position. Hurkacz has won three titles this year with a stunning run to a first Masters title at the Miami Open the best of them.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating third meeting between Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz, with their last encounter in the third round of Wimbledon in 2019 seeing a relatively unknown Polish youngster take a set off the eventual champion. Djokovic leads this head-to-head record 2-0 after also beating Hurkacz at Roland-Garros a month before but at 24 years old Hurkacz is vastly improved and still has room to progress further. The current world number 10’s prowess at the net is likely to come into play here which he has used to great effect in victories over the likes of Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev this season and it seems likelier than not that this match needs a decider. Taking Djokovic to win that decider is always the sensible line, and both players to win a set in a win for the world number one is the call here, but it would not be a huge surprise to see Hurkacz reach the final.
