THE LOWDOWN
World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas won the ATP Finals back in 2019 for what remains his greatest achievement to date. The 23-year-old added a first Masters title to his now seven career titles by winning the Monte-Carlo Open earlier this season, defeating his first Turin opponent Andrey Rublev in the final. Tsitsipas has played a season of two halves in 2021, with a stunning clay season almost culminating in a first Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros. However, Novak Djokovic’s win from two sets down in that final severely affected the Greek’s confidence and he has since failed to reach a final on tour having made five up to June.
World number five Andrey Rublev has endured a similar season, with a win over Tsitsipas taking him to the Rotterdam Open final back in March that he went on to win for an eighth career trophy. However, the 24-year-old has lost four of his last six matches on tour and failed to make it past the round of 16 at any of the last three Grand Slams. For Russia, Rublev has won the ATP Cup and a Mixed Doubles Gold Medal alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and he will be an important part of the RTF’s chances at the Davis Cup later this month.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a hugely interesting battle between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev with neither player coming into the ATP Finals on any great form. The pair have already played each other seven times on tour, with Tsitsipas’ win in the Monte-Carlo Masters final taking him to a 4-3 lead. The Greek has won three of the last five matches since 2020 and they are two wins apiece on hardcourts. Tsitsipas is 2-1 up indoors, including this time last season in three sets at the ATP Finals in London, but it remains to be seen how the 23-year-old takes to the fast conditions in Turin. The court is looking like favouring the big-servers this week, with both Tsitsipas and Rublev likely to lose out to the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev if they progress. Here, Tsitsipas has to be favoured to edge through as the man with more experience but the suitably cautious pick is for the Greek to win at least a set with Rublev well capable of taking this to a nervy decider.
