THE LOWDOWN
Defending ATP Finals champion Daniil Medvedev made the step up this year to reach his full potential in winning a first Grand Slam at the US Open. The world number two will make a fresh attempt at knocking Novak Djokovic off the top spot in 2022 after falling short at the last hurdle with defeat to the Serb in three sets in last weekend’s Paris Masters final. In what has been another stand-out season this year, though, 25-year-old Medvedev has won the ATP Cup with Team Russia, the Marseille Open, a first grass court title from the Mallorca Championships and a fourth Masters title at the Canadian Open.
24-year-old Hubert Hurkacz won his first Masters event out of the blue this year with a superb run at the Miami Open and after a subsequent blip the Pole pushed on to reach a first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon via defeats of Medvedev and Roger Federer. Hurkacz recently broke the top 10 for a first time and the world number nine looks set for an even more impressive season next year. Hurkacz lost to eventual Paris Masters champion Novak Djokovic in three sets in the semi-finals last weekend.
THE PREDICTION
This is practically the perfect opening match for this season’s ATP Finals between a rivalry that only got going in July at Wimbledon. In a match that spanned over two days due to poor weather, Hubert Hurkacz returned to a losing position on day two with a new resolve to eventually oust a frustrated Daniil Medvedev in five sets in the round of 16. The pair then played out a vastly entertaining quarter-final at the Cincinnati Open a month later that Medvedev came back from a set down to win with two tight tiebreaks. This has all the hallmarks of another close match, particularly as Medvedev lost his last match at the Paris Masters final, but there will likely be nerves from Hurkacz’s side of the court as he makes his ATP Finals debut here and that tends to make the Pole snatch at chances.
In the likelihood that this match sees three sets, the safe option is for Medvedev to win at least one of them. You could add a tiebreak in the match for an extra risk, with three of them played across their two meetings so far.
