THE LOWDOWN
24-year-old Alexander Zverev has enjoyed his best season on tour in terms of consistency, adding five more titles to his now career total of 18. The world number three has beaten several ATP Finalists already this season for some of those: winning the Mexican Open by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Madrid Masters by beating Matteo Berrettini, his first ATP Finals opponent here and the Cincinnati Masters by beating Andrey Rublev. He was also the man to thwart Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of the Golden Slam in the semi-final of the Tokyo Olympic Games en route to winning the Gold Medal there.
World number seven Matteo Berrettini has also enjoyed the best year of his career, qualifying for the ATP Finals for a second time here after also making the last eight in 2019. The 25-year-old reached a first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon where he took the first set off of Novak Djokovic before losing in four. He also lost to the Serb at Roland-Garros and the US Open for a spot of poor fortune but the potential is clearly there in the Italian, especially on grass where he won a first ATP 500 title at Queen’s back in June.
THE PREDICTION
Since the hardcourt swing unofficially started at the Tokyo Olympic Games, no player on tour has produced a better winning record than Alexander Zverev with 28-3. A close five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the US Open, a shock by Taylor Fritz at Indian Wells and his most recent in the semi-finals of the Paris Masters to Daniil Medvedev are his only defeats since mid-July with a Gold Medal, fifth Masters title and the Vienna Open to show for it. Matteo Berrettini came off the worse against the German in a tense, tight Madrid Masters earlier this year having taken the first set in a tiebreak. That looks to be a worrying pattern for the Italian against the top players – going up a set via a tiebreak with one of the toughest serves to break on tour but losing his intensity. Zverev leads their head-to-head record 3-1 and taking him to win this outright with Berrettini well capable of winning the first here looks a suitable option.
