THE PREDICTION
World number 39 Sebastian Korda was forced to come back from two tiebreaks down to the ever-improving Hugo Gaston on Tuesday to win his debut Next Gen ATP Finals match in five sets. The 21-year-old is one of three players in Milan to have won a first ATP title this season with his victory at the Emilia-Romagna Open on clay back in the summer but he has impressed on all courts. A run to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open on his debut or a round of 16 exit at Wimbledon are vying for his best showing this season but he looks to be second favourite behind Carlos Alcaraz to lift this trophy on Sunday. World number 111 Sebastian Baez is the lowest-ranked player in the draw and the Argentine only qualified due to Jenson Brooksby’s injury but he has taken his chance with both hands. The 20-year-old started hard and fast against home hopeful Lorenzo Musetti, whose confidence has been shot to pieces in the second-half of this season, to beat the Italian in four sets.
Baez’s element of surprise is gone now and Sebastian Korda is a much tougher man to beat at present, however both of their opening matches suggest this could go closer than it looks. Taking Korda as outright winner seems the sensible move here.
