THE PREDICTION
Hugo Gaston moved up to a career-high 67th in the ATP world rankings after an incredible run to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters. The 21-year-old is a vastly entertaining player capable of winning over huge swathes of the crowd in a matter of games, not least in Paris where he has now beaten Stan Wawrinka to reach last season’s Roland-Garros round of 16 and Pablo Carreno Busta alongside Carlos Alcaraz to reach the last eight at a Masters event. The Frenchman came close to taking the first set off a clearly rattled Daniil Medvedev and he looks set to break the top 40 sooner rather than later on performances like that.
World number 39 Sebastian Korda also lost to Daniil Medvedev in Paris in the round before, although the 21-year-old did manage to take a first set off the Russian. A three-set battle with Aslan Karatsev and a straight-sets win over Marin Cilic were hugely impressive form he can bring into a promising debut at the Next Gen Finals. Korda reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon back in July after winning his first ATP title at the Emilia-Romagna Open on clay in Italy. The American also performed well at the Miami Open on his debut, beating three top 30 players before defeat to Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals.
Hugo Gaston looks ready to take over Gael Monfils’ crown as France’s main showman for the next few years after winning hearts and minds at the Paris Masters last week. It remains to be seen how he fares on his Next Gen Finals debut after taking a third off his ATP world ranking, away from an adoring crowd but in similar indoor conditions. Sebastian Korda, also 21, was just as impressive last week but without half of the furore from a boisterous French crowd. The American took a set off the defending champion Daniil Medvedev, rarely done on a hardcourt, and he looked like a top 20 player in-waiting against Aslan Karatsev in the first round there. Take Korda to get the better of this first meeting, although Gaston could make things very interesting.
