19-year-old home hopeful Lorenzo Musetti was stunned early by Sebastian Baez on Tuesday but two tiebreaks in the last two games suggested he was finding his feet just a little too late. The Italian has a huge future and he almost exceeded anyone’s expectations by coming within a set of beating Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros this June before his energy was spent. Since then the 19-year-old has been a shell of himself on court but this should pass and he will likely be more competitive in this first encounter with Hugo Gaston. World number 67 Gaston, though, is in the form of his young career after a stunning run to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters last week spilled over into the first two sets of his match with Sebastian Korda on Tuesday. Gaston’s infectious on-court charisma looks set to continue both here in Milan and next season but if he can start as fast as Baez did on Tuesday this match is the Frenchman’s on form.
