24-year-ol Belinda Bencic won the Swiss Sportswoman of the Year honour in her native Switzerland this week after winning two Gold Medals at the Tokyo Olympic Games for her country in singles and doubles. The world number 23 struggled to match the intensity of her performances that week for the rest of the season but she should find her way back to the top 10 of the sport some time next year. World number 10 Ons Jabeur reached a career-high of seventh in the WTA word rankings back in November and she came perilously close to becoming the first Arab to qualify for the WTA Finals- were it not for superb late surges from Paula Badosa and Anett Kontaveit. She claimed a first WTA title at the Birmingham Classic and a 48-19 record for the season suggests she could win several more in 2022.
Bencic was the winner of their only previous meeting with Ons Jabeur retiring from the second set of their round of 16 match at the Madrid Open in May of this year. The Swiss is always a dangerous opponent but the support Jabeur is likely to receive as a true trailblazer for Arab athletes everywhere in the sport coupled with her desire to exercise the demons of just missing out on the WTA Finals should see the Tunisian over the line here.
