THE LOWDOWN
World number six Garbine Muguruza won the 10th WTA title of her career last week at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic with a superb fight back from a set down against Ons Jabeur. The 28-year-old looks like coming back into serious form just in time to contend for a second Masters title after her Cincinnati Open win in 2017, in which she won her second Grand Slam at Wimbledon. The former world number one has reached the quarter-finals twice at Indian Wells and she should be targeting more this time around. World number 47 Ajla Tomljanovic conceded just two games to Usue Maitaine Arconada on Thursday in keeping with some excellent form this season. The Aussie has four WTA titles to her name but her run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon back in July was especially impressive.
THE PREDICTION
Muguruza has won each of the last three meetings against Tomljanovic including two last season at the Qatar Open and Australian Open. Tomljanovic won their first encounter way back in 2014 and the Aussie has improved significantly this season from their last match with the potential for a thriller here in the second round. Muguruza’s last match being a title-winner in Chicago makes this first match in Indian Wells a tricky one to cope with mentally and that could see her drop at least a set. Take Muguruza to win outright or for the match to see three sets here as two out of four so far have between them.
