- Four tiebreaks and five sets later, Michael Mmoh is in the second round of the Australian Open after an emphatic, punishing encounter with Viktor Troicki coming back from 2-1 down to win on Tuesday.
- The 23-year-old is currently ranked at world number 177 and has matched his best placing at a Grand Slam with two second round exits here and at the US Open last season to Roberto Bautista Agut and Jan-Lennard Struff respectively.
RAFAEL NADAL
- All talk of a potential injury to Rafael Nadal was quelled for bow after the world number two made light work of beating Laslo Djere in straight sets to reach the second round.
- The 34-year-old will always be targeting the title at Grand Slams but especially now as one more would see him surpass Roger Federer as the male player with the most ever Grand Slams, with he and the Swiss both on 20 for now.
THE PREDICTION
Unfortunately for 23-year-old Michael Mmoh, it seems Rafael Nadal’s rest over the ATP Cup week has succeeded in avoiding an injury and the world number two looked strong against Laslo Djere. The fact that Nadal has several gears left to reach but easily beat Djere, no pushover at world number 56, suggests the Spaniard can continue his usual bulldozing in the first week of Grand Slams with a comprehensive straight-sets victory here. Mmoh is consistently reaching this stage of Grand Slams now, though, and should enjoy the occasion as he faces one of the Big Three for the first time.
