- 23-year-old Maxime Cressy won his second ever Grand Slam appearance in straight sets over the dwindling Taro Daniel and has been awarded a box-office second round match for his trouble.
- This will be Cressy’s second-highest opponent ever after he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round of the US Open last year and the American will be dangerous with nothing to lose.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
- World number seven Alexander Zverev did well to fight back from the expected early pressure against Marcos Giron, coming back from a set down to win their first round match in four sets.
- The 23-year-old did not drop a set until the quarter-finals here last season where he beat Stan Wawrinka in four sets and he will be targeting a more assured performance in this second round match.
THE PREDICTION
World number 172 Maxime Cressy will be ecstatic with his first round performance here to make it back-to-back second round matches against top 10 stars at Grand Slams in his only two major campaigns so far. The 23-year-old will look to Marcos Giron’s early work against Alexander Zverev as a blueprint for how to challenge the German but recently Zverev is less likely to underestimate his opponents as he once was. A loss in the final of the US Open seems to have matured Zverev into a more focused force and he was competitive in a defeat to Novak Djokovic last week at the ATP Cup to show his form is fine. Cressy could well force a tiebreak in this match with nothing to lose, much like his straight-sets defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open last season, but he is unlikely to claim a full set. Therefore, a Zverev win with at least one tiebreak in the match looks a useful option here.
