- World number 192 Mackenzie McDonald lost the first set of his first round match to Marco Cecchinato but did very well to win the following three to set-up a first meeting with Borna Coric.
- The 25-year-old has a pretty healthy Grand Slam record of 7-9 after that first round win but has some way to go if he is to emulate his best showing of a round of 16 loss to Milos Raonic at Wimbledon 2018.
BORNA CORIC
- 22nd-seed Borna Coric avoided a potential banana skin by beating world number 44 Guido Pella in straight sets on Tuesday in a match that was closer than it looked.
- The world number 25 should fare better against McDonald here as he aims to make the third round at the Australian Open for only the second time in seven appearances.
THE PREDICTION
Mackenzie McDonald has an extra gear saved away for Grand Slam matches that the 25-year-old should really attempt to tap into on tour as the American is clearly better than his current ranking at world number 192. However, Borna Coric got in plenty of good match practice last week and took out a tough first opponent in Guido Pella. The Croatian is still not fulfilling his potential but it would be a big surprise to not see him in the third round when this match concludes. McDonald has it in him to snatch a set here but it is more likely that the world number 25 can take this in straight sets.
