• The 27-year-old Czech got some useful match practice in at the Murray River Open last week, reaching the quarter-finals before defeat to eventual runner-up Felix Auger-Aliassime.

PABLO CARRENO BUSTA

• 29-year-old Pablo Carreno Busta got his Australian Open campaign under way in style on Monday with a straight sets victory over Kei Nishikori, who pushed him all the way.
• World number 16 Carreno Busta could be on his way back to his career-high 10^th in the ATP rankings that he achieved back in 2017 and it has taken the very best players to beat the Spaniard in recent months.

THE PREDICTION

Jiri Vesely’s five-set first round match was in keeping with his strong form at the Murray River Open last week but the Czech is likely to be found wanting here against a higher standard of opponent. 15^th seed Pablo Carreno Busta has made at least the quarter-finals in his last two Grand Slams and is an exceptionally consistent player on tour, losing usually only to players ranked above him in the last few months, save the odd anomaly like former top fiver Kevin Anderson. Vesely is a hard-working player and it would not be a surprise if he snatches a set here but the likelihood is this will be a straight-set win for the Spaniard.
