Sonay Kartal vs Jelena Ostapenko prediction
Sonay Kartal was close to reaching the last eight of the Nottingham Open but failed to see out her match with Katie Boulter. Kartal had the opportunity to go a double break up but Boulter came roaring back to win a tight encounter 6-4 1-6 7-5. She would have been disappointed not to have picked up another scalp after her first-round win over Daria Kasatkina at Queen’s Club a week earlier but Kartal is consistently improving and makes her debut at the event here.
She will take on 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the first-round of Eastbourne. Ostapenko won this event in 2021 and also made the final a year later but hasn’t yet featured on grass this season, having last played in the third-round of the French Open where she lost 6-2 6-2 to Elena Rybakina.
Ostapenko will be the favourite for this one, but she is short of match fitness and Kartal can disrupt her rhythm if she can add some variety to her shots. This could go the full three sets.
