Coached by Maurizio Sarri’s former assistant coach Francesco Calzona, the Slovakians started their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat of Germany before they then suffered a 6-0 loss in Germany to miss out on qualification.
Malta are one of a few European minnows to have improved as a result of the UEFA Nations League. That was shown by their defeat of Finland to finish their FIFA World Cup campaign back in the November international break.
Slovakia play some quite open and entertaining football, while Malta are certainly improving and so, while the hosts remain favourites, it may not be straightforward.
