Nikola Bartunkova continued her dream run in Guadalajara as she defeated defending champion Magdalena Frech in straight sets to book a place in her maiden WTA semi-final. The 19-year-old recovered from going a break down in both sets to win 7-5 6-4 after an hour and 38 minutes.
She will now take on Iva Jovic after the 17-year-old American dramatically held off the challenge of Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva in the quarter-finals. A tight encounter saw Jimenez Kasintseva fail on two occasions to close out the match in the decider, while Jovic also saved a match point in the third set tiebreak to win 6-3 3-6 7-6.
This is unchartered territory for both players, who are in the last four of a WTA event for the first time. Bartunkova has excelled this week, but Jovic is continuing to develop as a player and showed all of her fighting qualities in the last round. That is likely to benefit her for the latter stages of this event, and she should have enough to get through and make the first final of her career.
