Liudmila Samsonova has failed to get going again after her run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. She battled away against Naomi Osaka in Montreal but lost despite winning the first set, though Cincinnati was a lot more disappointing as she lost 6-2 6-4 against Taylor Townsend early on. The Russian is still a solid player on this surface and did make the last eight of Indian Wells in March. She now returns to Cleveland having won this event three years ago.
Caroline Dolehide is her opponent in the first-round. The American is currently on a three match loss streak and has just one main draw victory from her North American hard court summer swing so far. Her best result of the season was a quarter-final appearance in Austin but that was all the way back in February.
Samsonova will be disappointed with her current form after such an encouraging campaign at SW19 but a return to familiar and successful surroundings may give her the boost she needs against Dolehide.
