Luciano Darderi will hope it’s third time lucky on grass this year.

The 23-year-old Italian fell at the first hurdle in s’Hertogenbosch and Halle but will have his sights on a better outcome on his debut in Eastbourne. 

The world number 56 leads Marcos Giron 1-0 in their head-to-head but that did come on his favoured clay in Houston last year. 

The 31-year-old American opened his grass swing with a humbling loss to Alexander Zverev in Halle but did win the title in Newport last year and has made the last eight at several tournaments on the turf over the years. 

It’s that experience that may prove telling in this one, although Darderi is too much of a talent for his winless run on the surface to continue much longer.
