Jessica Pegula lost her first match on grass this season despite having a match point against Liudmila Samsonova at the German Open. Samsonova won 6-7 7-5 7-6 after three hours and 21 minutes. This will have been a disappointment for the American after success at the event last year, her only grass court title to date.
She will hope for a deeper run here and is the top seed. Katerina Siniakova will be her opponent after the Czech beat Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets in the first-round. She now has three victories this week after also making it out of qualifying.
Pegula leads the head-to-head 3-1 but it’s 1-1 on grass. They faced each other at the exact same stage of this event four years ago, with Siniakova winning a close three set match, while Pegula came out on top in the quarter-finals of the German Open last year, also in three sets.
This is a difficult match for the American as history suggests, especially on this surface, and it would not be surprising if this went the distance once again.
