Hamburg preview: Establishing themselves
Having spent far too long outside of the Bundesliga for a club of their size, Hamburg gained promotion to the top-flight in the 2024-25 campaign and comfortably survived last season, albeit they did fade towards the end of the campaign.
They began the 2026-27 Bundesliga season with a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund last weekend due to first half goals scored by Serhou Guirassy and Giannis Konstantelias before Samuele Inacio was sent off for Dortmund late on in the second half.
Mainz preview: Frustrating opener
Mid-way through last season, Mainz had to move on from impressive coach Bo Henriksson and replace him with Urs Fischer, who pushed them clear from the bottom three and into the middle-of-the-table.
Expecting to be strong again this time around, the visitors were left frustrated on the opening weekend of the campaign as they were held to a goalless draw by newly-promoted Paderborn last weekend.
Hamburg team news: Defensive doubts
Switzerland international defender Miro Muheim is a doubt for this one alongside fellow defender Warmed Omari, while versatile forward Alexander Rossing-Lelesiit is a confirmed absentee.

Hamburg vs Mainz prediction
There is a view that Mainz will challenge for the top seven or eight once again under the management of Urs Fischer, having flirted with that due to their excellent form in the second half of last season – despite spending the first half of the campaign in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places. Hamburg do appear indifferent at the moment, too, especially in attack and so as they both begin to settle in the Bundesliga, a low-scoring clash seems a decent bet for this one.
