How did Haiti qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026?

With the benefit of Canada, Mexico and the United States having automatically qualified for the tournament; the rest of CONCACAF had three more spots to play for, along with two Inter-Confederation spots.

Having finished as runners up in Group C of the second qualification round, with three victories and a defeat to Curacao, Haiti then produced a major upset to knock both Honduras and Costa Rica out of FIFA World Cup qualifying in round three.

Heading into the final two rounds of Group C fixtures with FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification in the balance Haiti edged past Costa Rica by a goal to nil in Curacao before beating Nicaragua by two goals to nil in Willemstad on November 18, 2025, thus finishing top of the group, two points clear of second-placed Honduras and booking their place at FIFA World Cup 2026.

Who are Haiti’s star players?

Aside from goalkeeper Johny Placide (Bastia), a couple of the other most experienced players in this summer’s squad come in the final third with former Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Duckens Nazon (Esteghlal) one of their key figures alongside striker Frantzdy Pierrot (Caykur Rizespor) – both of whom enjoyed impressive qualifying campaigns. Nazon was the joint top scorer in CONCACAF qualification alongside Guatemala striker Oscar Santis and is Haiti’s all-time record goalscorer.

They do also have a couple of Premier League players, too, with English Premier League midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde (Wolves) having made his national team debut in 2025 and former France youth international striker Wilson Isidor (Sunderland), who has enjoyed an impressive debut season in the English top-flight, having joined up with the national team of Haiti in March.

Expert prediction for Haiti’s chances at FIFA World Cup 2026

Qualifying for FIFA World Cup 2026 is and should already be a success for the Haitian national team, while bringing further awareness to the troubles in their home country may be something that is regularly highlighted.

On the pitch, getting past the emotion of it all, this is expected to be an extremely difficult assignment for the Central Americans. They were always going to be underdogs regardless of their draw but they have also been placed into what is a very tough group alongside five-time world champions Brazil, 2022 semi-finalists Morocco – as well as a Scotland side back at the global tournament for the first time this century.

Haiti, in what are more familiar conditions in North America, may well be able to frustrate and contain, especially in their opening fixture against Scotland but with Brazil and Morocco to come, their task to avoid a group stage still looks like being well beyond them.
