How to watch online: UK – HBO Max / USA – Paramount+

Key stats

  • The first leg was the first UEFA meeting between Braga and Freiburg.
  • Before this tie, Freiburg’s only previous UEFA meetings with Portuguese opposition came against Estoril Praia in the 2013/14 Europa League group stage, where they recorded two draws (1-1 at home, 0-0 away).
  • This is Freiburg’s first UEFA competition semi‑final appearance. They are the 18th different German club to reach the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League semi‑finals, four more than any other nation — with England next on 14.
  • Freiburg are aiming to become the 11th German club to reach the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League final. Germany already hold the record with ten, one more than England’s nine — though England will reach ten this season, as neither Aston Villa nor Nottingham Forest have previously made the final.
  • Freiburg have won their last ten UEFA home matches, keeping seven clean sheets.
  • Only two of Freiburg’s last 35 UEFA matches have finished without a goal being scored.
  • Before this tie, Freiburg have lost the first leg of a UEFA two‑legged tie away from home by a one‑goal margin on three occasions, progressing once — against Genk in this season’s Europa League round of 16, where they overturned a 1-0 defeat with a 5-1 home win.
  • Vincenzo Grifo has scored in three of Freiburg’s last four UEFA Europa League matches.
  • Braga have won six of their last eight UEFA matches against German teams (D1 L1).
  • Braga have lost both of their previous UEFA two‑legged ties against German opposition: a 2-0 aggregate defeat to Schalke in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup third round, followed by a 4-0 aggregate loss to Werder Bremen in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 32.
  • Braga have reached only their second major UEFA semi‑final, the first coming in the 2010/11 Europa League, when they advanced to the final on away goals against Benfica after a 2–2 aggregate draw.
  • Braga are the first Portuguese club to reach a UEFA semi‑final since the 2013/14 Europa League, when Benfica beat Juventus 2-1 on aggregate. That remains the most recent appearance by a Portuguese club in a UEFA final.
  • Braga have won their last eight UEFA two-legged ties.
  • Braga have lost only two of their last 20 UEFA matches (W14 D4).
  • Braga have won the second leg in ten of their last 11 UEFA two‑legged ties, drawing the other.
  • Braga have played more matches in the UEFA Europa League era (from the group stage/league phase to the final) than any other club, with this fixture being their 101st appearance in the competition proper.
  • Before this tie, Braga have won seven of their eight UEFA two‑legged ties after a one‑goal home victory in the first leg. The only exception came in the 2021/22 Europa League quarter‑finals against Rangers, when they won 1-0 at home but lost the return leg 3-1 after extra time.

Freiburg vs Braga prediction

Freiburg will be kicking themselves after the first leg given that they conceded in injury-time to ultimately lose 1-2 at Braga. The German side had already battled back from a goal down, and goalkeeper Noah Atubolu had even saved a penalty at the end of the first half. However, Atubolu himself was fault for Braga's winner, meaning they have to now come from behind in the second leg of this UEFA Europa League semi-final.

The Bundesliga outfit are now winless in their last four games across all competitions, while Braga have lost one one of their last nine as they continue to deliver solid displays in the business end of the campaign.

With that in mind, we have some confidence that the Portuguese outfit can see out this tie, even if they don't end up winning on the night.
