Adrian Mannarino’s fabulous form continued as he edged Matteo Berrettini in the first round in Shanghai.
The veteran Frenchman is enjoying a superb sequence of results as he rises to within sight of the top 50 having just been inside the leading 200 at the start of the year.
The 37-year-old clinched a narrow 7-5 7-6 win over the Italian to set up a first showdown with Francisco Cerundolo.
The Argentine world number 21 sits 39 places above Mannarino but he’s struggled to string a run of results together of late and has been the victim of some ranking upsets too.
If the South American gets that weapon of a forehand firing he’ll be tough to stop, but Mannarino has been playing wonderful stuff and it’s getting to the point where it’s risky backing against him when he’s no up against the game’s truly elite.
