THE LOWDOWN

BAYERN MUNICH

For the first time since 2012, someone other than Bayern Munich have clinched the Bundesliga title. Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-0 hammering of Werder Bremen at the weekend has now officially confirmed what was known for a while and that is that Bayern’s only chance of silverware this season will come in the UEFA Champions League.

With the final taking place at Wembley Stadium, where Bayern won the trophy in 2013, there will be a sentimental belief the Bavarians are destined for European glory. They performed better than they have for the vast majority of this season in the first-leg of this quarter-final tie at the Emirates Stadium last week as they shared a 2-2 draw.

ARSENAL

Mikel Arteta will be feeling sucker punched after Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium at the weekend. With Liverpool suffering a surprise loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield, the Gunners had the chance to make the title race more of a two-horse race but have instead given up ground on defending treble winners Manchester City.

That loss at home to Unai Emery’s Villains means that Arsenal have perhaps been unconvincing since hammering Sheffield United by six goals to nil at Bramall Lane in early March. They edged past Brentford, needed penalties against Porto and have since won just two of five matches across all competitions since the March international break.

THE TEAM NEWS

BAYERN MUNICH

Thomas Tuchel will be missing key defender Alphonso Davies with the Canadian international out suspended. Sacha Boey, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman are all out with hamstring injuries alongside Bouna Sarr, suffering from a knee issue.

ARSENAL

Mikel Arteta has said that Jurrien Timber could play again for the Gunners this season but will not yet be available for the first-team. Kai Havertz moved back into midfield at the weekend but the expectation is that the German international returns to Arsenal’s front-line. Martin Odegaard is a doubt.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): David Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior; Odegaard, Jorginho, Rice; Saka, Havertz, Martinelli

UNAVAILABLE: Timber (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Odegaard (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

It was an absolute thriller in the first-leg in north London and another exciting encounter is to be expected at the Allianz Arena. Bayern have lacked cohesion in both defence and attack this season and the absence of Serge Gnabry will be a major issue for their chaos theory. Arsenal head to Germany in likely a bad mood and there has been instances in the past, most notably just before the turn of the year, where the Gunners have suffered losses in quick succession and need a real break in order to reset. As a result of that, their home advantage and absolute outright desperation and need to salvage something from this season, backing Bayern may well be the best bet for this one.
