THE LOWDOWN

VALENCIA

Last season, interim coach Ruben Baraja managed to steer Valencia clear of relegation on the final day of the season. Off-field issues meant that his permanent appointment was overshadowed by a belief they would once again been struggling this time around. However, the Valencians head into the final few weeks with a chance of finishing in the top seven and the European spots.

The home team have slightly collapsed as we head into the final month of the season, though. They come into this one on the back of three successive losses and opening up a gap between themselves and the top seven. They most recently suffered a 1-0 loss to Deportivo Alaves at Mestalla in their previous game, last weekend.

RAYO VALLECANO

After a turbulent summer transfer window in which Rayo Vallecano lost their manager Andoni Iraola to AFC Bournemouth as well as key men such as Alejandro Catena, Fran Garcia and Santi Comesana; Rayo went into the season as one of the red-hot favourites for relegation before a genuinely impressive and surprisingly good run of form under the management of Francisco.

Francisco, though, soon oversaw a really long run of form that saw them collapse down the table for much of the winter. They have improved again, though, under Andoni Iraola’s former assistant, Inigo Perez. They do, though, come into this one on the back of a 1-0 loss to bottom-of-the-table and already relegated Almeria at Vallecas.

THE TEAM NEWS

VALENCIA

Jose Luis Gaya is a doubt for this weekend’s clash with Rayo, whilst both Jaume Domenech and Fran Perez remain unavailable due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Mamardashvili; Correia, Mosquera, Ozkacar, Vasquez; Canos, Pepelu, Guerra, Lopez; Almeida, Duro

UNAVAILABLE: Domenech (Injured), Perez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Vasquez (Injured), Gaya (Injured)

RAYO VALLECANO

There is just one injury concern for Rayo Vallecano this weekend as they travel to Mestalla to face Valencia as Diego Mendez is unavailable for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Dimitrievski; Balliu, Mumin, Lejeune, Chavarria; Palazon, Valentin, Lopez, Garcia; Falcao, Trejo

UNAVAILABLE: Mendez (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Neither of these two teams are finishing with much a flourish. With 12 points to play for, Valencia’s poor run of form means they begin five points behind the top seven with their success this season being seen as generally unsustainable with it relying on low-scoring victories that have often come at Mestalla. Rayo, though, are finishing in really poor form, despite an initial improvement under Inigo Perez. Therefore, a typically low-scoring Valencia win seems the thing to back for this one.

TIP: VALENCIA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
