GETAFE
Jose Bordalas once took Getafe into the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League but the Madrid club have since drifted back to their general rightful position of a club battling against relegation. Bordalas has once again instilled the aggression and physicality emblematic of his classic Getafe side since his re-appointment at the Coliseum in March.
They have started this season with some inconsistent but typically aggressive performances in their opening four matches. They held Barcelona to a goalless draw on the opening day, in which there were 26 minutes of added time. Since then they have been hammered by Girona in Catalonia, edged out by Real Madrid in second-half stoppage-time at the Bernabeu but also beaten newly-promoted Alaves by a goal to nil.
OSASUNA
Last season, Osasuna qualified for the 2023/24 UEFA Europa Conference League, earning European football in Pamplona for the first time in over 15 years. They also reached the final of the Copa del Rey, eventually losing to Real Madrid in the final at La Cartuja in Seville. The Navarre club will be expected to fall away from those heights but remain a strong outfit under the management of Jagoba Arrasate.
That European qualification didn’t bear fruit, though, as Osasuna were beaten by Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Club Brugge over two legs. They began the 2023/24 La Liga campaign with an impressive 2-0 win Galicia away to Celta Vigo but have since collecting just one point, albeit in tough matches against Basque duo Athletic Club and Real Sociedad as well as Catalan giants Barcelona.

Over the past few seasons, due to the rise and success of ‘Cholismo’, Spanish football has fallen into a habit of being overly and needlessly aggressive. ‘Needlessly’ is perhaps a harsh description, though, as teams, like Getafe especially, have benefitted and performed above their general reputation and expectations. It does mean, though, that games such as this one are unlikely to provide much entertainment or much of a footballing spectacle.
