THE LOWDOWN

Cadiz

Cadiz have endured successive defeats ahead of this one as they battle against finishing in the bottom three and being relegated from La Liga this season. Last weekend, they travelled to Real Mallorca and were beaten by a goal to nil in Palma as Pablo Maffeo scored a 16th minute winner. That does now make it just two wins in their last 11 matches in La Liga, despite a slight improvement in their performances.

Sergio’s Andalusians have been renowned for their dogged and determined 4-4-2 system, which has served them well in the top-flight since promotion in 2021. However, as happened in the Balearic Islands last weekend, when and if they do go behind early on then it can be very difficult for them to turn the tide in their favour. The 26 goals that they have scored so far this season is the joint lowest with bottom-of-the-table and already relegated Elche.

With four games of the Primera season to go, they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting a point outside of the bottom three. They remain without some key players such as Roger and Victor Chust, due to injury, as they head into the run-in.

Real Valladolid

Real Valladolid head into this relegation six-pointer on the back of a 3-0 hammering at the hands of a much-improved Sevilla. That was their fourth successive defeat and they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting level on points with Cadiz in La Liga but below the Andalusians on goal difference.

Valladolid’s 3-0 loss to Sevilla means they have now conceded 12 goals in their last four games as they slip perilously close to a return to the second-tier, following promotion last season. Valladolid will be extremely frustrated after starting last weekend quite well against a Sevilla side with their focus on their UEFA Europa League semi-final tie against Juventus but they were blown away by the Andalusians in the second-half of that match.

The club owned by Brazilian legend Ronaldo have managed to score just 30 goals this season with the aforementioned Cadiz and Elche having scored fewer goals than Valladolid in the 2022/23 La Liga campaign.

THE PREDICTION

The tension in this one is going to be high with both sides in serious danger of being chased down and overtaken by Getafe and, potentially also, Espanyol. Both sides come into this one in the south of Spain in poor form and the two sides have combined for just 56 goals apiece, too. They are level on points and are two very evenly matched sides as they battle against Liga relegation. Given how evenly matched the two sides are, their poor form and their low-scoring tendencies, under 2.5 goals seems almost inevitable for this one.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
