THE LOWDOWN

VITORIA GUIMARAES

In 2022, Vitoria qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League but lost several key players over the summer such as Andre Almeida, Marcus Edwards, Ricardo Quaresma, Oscar Estupinan and Rochinha, as well as manager Pepa. They started slowly and were eliminated from the European competition at the third qualifying round stage.

They recovered in the second-half of the campaign, under the management of Moreno, and qualified for the UECL once again. Once again, though, they were knocked out in their first tie but did start well domestically. They won their opening three matches of this season’s Primeira Liga campaign before a 4-0 hammering at the hands of reigning champions Benfica in their most recent outing before the international break.

PORTIMONENSE

Portimonense had a horrible end to last season, winning just five of their remaining 27 matches and collecting just 19 points in that time, too. Former Al Taawon boss Paulo Sergio remains in charge of ‘Alvinegros’ for this season, as he has been since 2020. They are expected to battle against the drop throughout the campaign and have started very badly.

They come into this on the back of beginning their season with 5-0 annihilation at the hands of Gil Vicente and then backing that up by being battered 4-1 by Boavista. Since those two defeats they have slightly steadied the ship with back-to-back 1-1 draws against Arouca and Estrela da Amadora but they remain in the bottom two and the automatic relegation spots ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.

THE PREDICTION

The home team can irritate their supporters quite a lot. Despite losing so many key players last summer, they performed something of a miracle to qualify for Europe; only to lose to Slovenian side Celje in qualification. Once again, though, they are generally overperforming pre-season expectations domestically. They now face a Portimonense side that for some time now have been one of, if not the, weakest in the Primeira Liga. A comfortable Vitoria win is to be expected, especially with their home advantage.

TIP: VITORIA TO WIN
