THE LOWDOWN
Vitoria Guimaraes
In the 2021/22 Primeira Liga campaign, Vitoria managed to finish inside the top six and qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League. However, they lost their manager, Pepa, as well as several key players in the summer of 2022. Andre Almeida, Oscar Estupinan, Rochinha, Marcus Edwards and Ricardo Quaresma led the exodus.
They started this season very well and also endured a blip in the last couple of months but, under the management of Moreno, they are finishing the 2022/23 campaign with a push for European qualification, once again.
The hosts come into this on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat away to a Rio Ave side that were promoted last season. They have now enjoyed three successive victories and they confirmed their UEFA Europa Conference League qualification last weekend.
Gil Vicente
Last season, Gil Vicente began the season really slowly but they managed to finish the campaign really strongly by finishing in the top five and ensuring UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.
Once again, the visitors, under the management of Daniel Sousa, started the season very well before a mid-season improvement. Their improvement has not been quite as dramatic last season as they sit firmly in the bottom-half of the Primeira Liga table.
Their most recent outing was a much-needed and comfortable 3-1 victory over Boavista, last weekend, ending a four-match losing streak and a winless run of form that had been extended to eight games.
THE PREDICTION
Both of these sides come into this on the back of respective victories but they are in very different form, generally, at either ends of the Primeira Liga table. The home team have enjoyed three successive wins but they are unlikely to be exceptionally motivated for this encounter, given that European football has been secured for next season. Gil Vicente, though, are unlikely to be able to take advantage of Vitoria’s potential apathy. A low-scoring encounter is expected for this one, regardless of the match result.
