THE LOWDOWN

Santa Clara

With two games of the 2022/23 Primeira Liga season to go, Santa Clara sit rock-bottom of the table but they have not yet been mathematically relegated. The home team have managed just four victories throughout the entire season and they sit four points off Maritimo in the relegation playoff place.

The hosts have begun to loosen their style of play in recent weeks, though, with their most recent outing being a 5-3 defeat away to Artur Jorge’s Sporting Braga, last weekend. Their last five matches have consisted of 21 goals in the top-flight. The visitors have managed just one win in their last 23 matches across all competitions.

Santa Clara went behind to top three chasing Braga after ten minutes before fighting back seven minutes later. They did then fall to being 3-1 behind by half-time. Remarkably, though, Santa Clara fought back to be level at 3-3 before Braga managed to pull away in the final stages of the match.

Portimonense

Portimonense come into this on the back of a 5-1 shellacking at the hands of champions-elect Benfica in their most recent outing, last weekend. The visitors have collected just a point in their last three matches, losing 5-1 and 4-1 either side of a 1-1 draw away to Casa Pia.

They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures in the bottom-half of the table but comfortably safe of the bottom three and the danger zone. The 2022/23 Primeira Liga has had a low-scoring theme throughout the campaign and the away team are very much a part of that. In their 32 matches so far this season, they have scored just 25 goals and only one team, Pacos de Ferreira, have scored fewer.

The aforementioned 5-1 defeat to Roger Schmidt’s Benfica saw Portimonense go 2-0 down early on and have it at 3-1 with less than five minutes of the 90 to go. However, the Lisbon club managed to put Portimonense to the sword with Petar Musa’s 87th and 89th minute goals.

THE PREDICTION

These two sides have combined for just 50 goals between them in their 32 games so far this season. With two games of the Primeira Liga campaign to go, Santa Clara can be relegated this weekend if they lose or even if they win and Maritimo also manage to defeat Vizela at home. Portimonense have very little to play for, though, so, given their desperation, as well as their home advantage, Santa Clara are the slight favourites for what should still be a low-scoring encounter.
