THE LOWDOWN

RIO AVE

Rio Ave’s biggest achievement over the summer was managing to keep hold of their manager, Luis Freire. He gained promotion with the club to the top-flight in 2022 and then kept them up quite comfortably, finishing in mid-table. However, he is now under pressure after a really slow start to the campaign.

In their opening eight matches of the 2023/24 Portuguese Primeira Liga season, Rio Ave have managed just one victory as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places. They have suffered three successive defeats and have scored just six goals so far this season, too.

FARENSE

Farense gained automatic promotion to the Portuguese top-flight last season, finishing below Moreirense in the table. Over the summer, they made the appointment of journeyman coach Jose Mota as they looked to ensure survival; with that primary goal leading the season being a success by the end.

The ‘Lions of Faro’ come into this on the back of a 3-2 defeat away to Vilaverdense in the third round of the Taca de Portugal in their most recent outing, last weekend. The visitors, though have managed just two wins in their eight matches as they sit struggling in the bottom-half of the table at the moment.

THE PREDICTION

These are two struggling sides in the Portuguese Primeira Liga that are very much languishing down in the bottom area of the table. The two teams have combined for just 17 goals so far this season and three victories so the likelihood of a thriller is unlikely. Rio Ave will perhaps fancy their chances with their home advantage but the best bet is to back a low-scoring encounter with under 2.5 goals very likely.

BETTING TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
