THE LOWDOWN

PORTIMONENSE

After a bright start to the 2022/23 campaign, in which Portimonense managed five victories in their opening seven matches, they drastically fell off with just five wins in their 27 games for the rest of the season. That made them one the favourites to be struggling against the drop throughout this campaign.

The home team come into this on the back of a 4-1 hammering of Covilha in the third round of the Taca de Portugal in their most recent outing, last weekend. Portimonense started the season slowly but they have suffered just two defeats in seven matches across all competitions since beginning with back-to-back defeats.

ESTORIL

Last season, Estoril flirted with the top six and the European spots but they moved on from former Benfica boss Nelson Verissimo to Alvaro Pacheco over the summer. After a bad start to the campaign, though, with pre-season expectations of challenging towards the European spots, Pacheco has been replaced by Vasco Seabra.

The ‘Canaries’ begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the 2023/24 Portuguese Primeira Liga table after eight matches. The visitors have managed just one win in their opening eight games and that victory came on the opening day of the season with a 4-3 win after trailing three times in that game.

THE PREDICTION

These are two of the weaker sides in Portuguese football and it could well be an even contest between two reactive and naturally defensive teams. Portuguese football has gained a reputation for being low-scoring and dull with under 2.5 goals quite common and both of these sides fall into that category. Portimonense remain slight favourites but another low-scoring match is in store against a struggling Estoril side.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
