THE LOWDOWN
Pacos Ferreira
With two games of the 2022/23 Primeira Liga campaign to go, Pacos de Ferreira begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places. They are three points adrift of Maritimo who are in the relegation/promotion playoff place.
If Maritimo are beaten by Vizela this weekend then Pacos Ferreira can move level on points with the Funchal club with just one game of the season to go. However, the hosts come into this on the back of some really poor form with a 2-0 loss to Chaves meaning they have managed just one win in their last eight matches.
With 23 goals scored and 58 goals conceded in their 32 games so far this season, it would be seen as a bit of a robbery if Pacos de Ferreira were to avoid automatic relegation but there remains a chance.
Rio Ave
Rio Ave were promoted back to the top-flight last season and they have enjoyed an impressive return to Portugal’s elite. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures, with two games of the 2022/23 campaign to go, sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table having secured safety a few months ago.
The home team come into this on the back of a 1-0 defeat at home to Vitoria in their most recent outing, last weekend. Despite their relatively impressive campaign of general overperformance, that defeat does make it just one win in their last seven matches.
Luis Freire’s Rio Ave have already achieved their goal, which was and is survival, after winning Liga Portugal 2 last season. The Vilacondenses can be forgiven for drifting towards the end of the season.
THE PREDICTION
Neither of these sides are likely to get people out of their seats with the two teams combining for just 61 goals so far this season. Pacos de Ferreira head into the final two rounds of fixtures with the possibility of a lifeline in the relegation/promotion playoff at the end of the season but they are not really showing signs of improvement or fight in recent weeks. Rio Ave, on the other hand, may well have, fairly, clocked off for the rest of the campaign. Given that, as well as their home advantage, Pacos Ferreira will fancy their chances of earning a much-needed three points but it would be worth hedging.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE - PACOS FERREIRA TO WIN OR DRAW
