THE PREDICTION
A historic day for Newcastle United sees them arrive at Wembley on mass for their first cup final since the 1998-99 FA Cup final. As was the case back then, it’s Man Utd who stand between the Magpies and a first major trophy since the 1968-69 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The magnitude of the occasion from a Newcastle perspective simply cannot be underestimated and the pressure on their players will be huge. Boss Eddie Howe will have to do without first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope through suspension, with Loris Karius expected to play between the sticks with second-choice stopped Martin Dubravka cup-tied.
Man Utd boast numerous serial trophy winners among their side such as David De Gea, Raphael Varane and Casemiro, but none have lifted silverware with the Red Devils as of yet. That big-match experience in such a highly-charged encounter should prove critical here. But it’s important to note that Newcastle contain the strongest defence in the Premier League and only once all season have lost by more than a one-goal margin, that being last weekend against Liverpool after having Pope sent off in the first half. Erik ten Hag’s side will not find it easy to break the Geordies down and another close contest is expected, as was the case last October when the two clubs played out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. Whatever the final outcome, goals are likely to be at a premium and backing under 2.5 goals to be scored over the 90 minutes, has to be favoured.
