In dramatic and exceptional circumstances last season, Cagliari reached promotion back to the top-flight at the first attempt last season by defeating Bari in the end of season two-legged playoffs. Under the management of Claudio Ranieri, the Sardinians are not expected to be in too much danger this season with their 2022 relegation seen as a bit of anomaly.
They come into this on the back of a slow start to the 2023/24 Serie A campaign. Cagliari began the season with a 2-1 win at home to Citta di Palermo in the first round of the Coppa Italia before a goalless draw with Torino in Turin on the opening day of the league season. Since then they have suffered back-to-back defeats to Internazionale and Bologna.
UDINESE
Towards the start of the 2022/23 Serie A season, Udinese enjoyed six successive victories as they climbed the table towards the top four and the UEFA Champions League qualification spots until mid-October. The Friulians eventually collapsed down the table and finished in the bottom-half, winning just five of their remaining 30 matches.
The Pozzo family, who have come under pressure by both Udinese and Watford supporters, have decided to stick by Andrea Sottil but the 2023/24 campaign started badly, too. They were hammered 3-0 by Juventus on the opening day of the season before back-to-back underwhelming draws against Salernitana and then drawing 0-0 at home to newly-promoted Frosinone.

Neither of these two teams have started in overly convincing fashion and both could well be set for a long and difficult Serie A campaign. Despite being a big club, Cagliari have just been promoted so will have to contend with that and settle for seeing survival as success. Udinese, based on their performances for almost two thirds of last season, are simply one of the weaker sides in the division. A fairly dull and uninteresting encounter is expected for this one.
