After dragging themselves out of the 2. Bundesliga last season, Schalke 04 face the nightmare scenario of an immediate return to the second tier of German football following a tough campaign back in the top flight. Having said that, their form has been decent over the past few weeks which has kept themselves just above the automatic relegation places, but they do currently occupy the relegation play-off place with them trailing 15th-placed Bochum by one point going into this penultimate round of Bundesliga fixtures. Worryingly for Schalke, it’s a difficult final couple of games to end the season, this match against Eintracht Frankfurt backed up by a final match of the campaign away to RB Leipzig.
It was a chastening experience for Schalke 04 last weekend who faced league leaders Bayern Munich. After trailing by two goals to nil at half time, the wheels fell off for Schalke in the second half. A Serge Gnabry brace made it 4-0 before Bayern added an extra two goals through Mathys Tel and Noussair Mazraoui to complete a 6-0 hammering. Such a result will have had a huge adverse effect on Schalke’s goal difference, which is worse than that of the two teams below them in the table and now just one goal better than that of Bochum.
EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
Eintracht Frankfurt’s long run without victory in the Bundesliga finally came to an end this past weekend, as they overcame Mainz 3-0. Prior to that result, the only victories accrued by Eintracht since February 18th came in the DFB-Pokal. It has been a miserable league run which has left them with a mountain to climb if they want to finish the season inside the top six. But having made the DFB-Pokal final, Oliver Glasner’s side can yet qualify for Europe next season through that route. That doesn’t mean Glasner will want his men to take their foot off the pedal in terms of the Bundesliga and Eintracht will be looking to finish strong.
It was a comprehensive, dominating performance last time out from Eintracht, who took the lead over Mainz through a penalty from Daichi Kamada on 18 minutes before Aurelio Buta doubled the advantage after 40 minutes. French international Randal Kolo Muani added a third goal just before the hour to complete a comfortable victory. This ended a winless run in the Bundesliga that had extended to ten games prior to Mainz’s visit to Frankfurt.

The suspension of Marius Bulter serves as a huge blow for Schalke with his goals having been crucial for them in recent weeks. Tim Skarke is likely to replace on the left-hand-side of an attacking midfield three with captain Simon Terodde potentially getting the nod to start up top. After shipping eight goals in their last two matches, the experienced Maya Yoshida has to be considered a strong candidate to come into the starting line-up in an attempt to shore up the Schalke backline.

Schalke 04 will be hoping that home advantage serves them well in what is a massive encounter from their perspective. Three points would prove worth their weight in gold and could take the hosts out of the bottom three entirely, putting their fate in their own hands ahead of the last game of the season. Despite their most recent win, it’s still hard not to think that Eintracht Frankfurt don’t have their eyes on the DFB-Pokal which may play into Schalke’s favour with their players no doubt set to fight for their lives over the course of this 90 minutes. Therefore, utilise the double chance market to back a draw or victory for the hosts.
