THE LOWDOWN
STRASBOURG
As a large French club, Strasbourg have had to endure the summer humiliation that Chelsea’s ownership group, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, have now taken over the club and are essentially using Strasbourg as something of a feeder organisation. They have, though, been able to sign some players they may not have expected to with the arrivals of Abakar Sylla and Angelo Gabriel.
Following the appointment of Patrick Vieira over the summer, Strasbourg have started the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign in impressive form. Their opening encounter was a 2-1 win at home to Olympique Lyonnais before being hammered by three goals to nil away to Monaco. After that they cruised to a 2-0 win against Toulouse before suffering a 2-0 loss to Nice.
MONTPELLIER
Last season Montpellier Herault faded relatively badly and ended up sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table but dropping into the bottom-half. They have moved on from Olivier Dell’Orco and are now coached by Armenian manager Michel Der Zakarian. They, due to the league’s reduction in teams from 20 to 18, will be a little concerned about being dragged into the dog fight down at the bottom.
They come into this on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat away to Lille in their most recent outing, a couple of weeks ago, before the international break. Montpellier have won just one of their opening four matches and languish down in the bottom-half of the table. That one win came away to crisis club Olympique Lyonnais at Parc OL in mid-August.
THE TEAM NEWS
STRASBOURG
Patrick Vieira will be aiming to name an unchanged lineup for this weekend’s clash with Montpellier, albeit he is dealing with four first-team injuries.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Sels; Perrin, Nyamsi, Sylla; Guilbert, Doukoure, Sissoko, Delaine; Diarra, Emegha, Deminguet
UNAVAILABLE: Fila (Injured), Chahiri (Injured), Sobol (Injured), Bastian (Injured)

MONTPELLIER
Montpellier are without Theo Sainte-Luce due to injury but they are still expected to name an unchanged side for this weekend as that has been a long-term absence.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Lecomte; Sacko, Omeragic, Kouyate, Sylla; Leroy, Chotard; Al-Taamari, Savanier, Khazri; Adams
UNAVAILABLE: Sainte-Luce (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
Despite heavy investment in the summer and the promising appointment of Patrick Vieira, Strasbourg have been relatively unconvincing at the start of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign. The hosts sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table with two defeats and two victories so far. They now face a Montpellier Herault side that have managed just one win of their opening four games and could struggle this season. Given their home advantage, value can be found in backing Strasbourg.
