THE LOWDOWN

MONTPELLIER

The Ligue 1 reduction of 20 to 18 teams over the summer left a lot of clubs concerned that the likelihood of being drawn into a relegation battle was higher and Montpellier Herault, under the management of Michel Der Zakarian, are indeed one of those teams as they finished in mid-table last season.

After eight matches of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign, Montpellier have managed just two victories with three draws so far. The home team come into this on the back of a 2-0 loss to Nantes in their most recent outing, last weekend, and that means they have managed just one win in their last six matches.

TOULOUSE

In recent seasons, Toulouse have gained promotion back to the top-flight of French football and then built themselves into a comfortable mid-table finish. Alongside that mid-table finish, though, they also managed to go on to win the Coupe de France and, as a consequence, qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.

They have had a very steady but slow start to the season with two wins, two defeats and five draws in nine matches. Following on from the October international break, Toulouse were thrashed by five goals to one by Liverpool in the aforementioned UEFA Europa League after sharing a 1-1 draw at home to Stade de Reims last weekend.

TOULOUSE

Toulouse have several injury concerns as they face Montpellier with the likes of Zakaria Aboukhlal and Ibrahim Cissoko unavailable for their game this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Restes; Desler, Costa, Nicolaisen, Suazo; Sierro; Donnum, Schmidt, Casseres Jr, Gelabert; Dallinga

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides that will be looking over their shoulders this season because of the aforementioned reduction in size of Ligue 1. Given that, there is a possibility that these two sides could come into the match quite cautiously with both struggling for victories having managed just two wins apiece so far this season. A low-scoring encounter between these two is expected with under 2.5 goals quite likely.

BETTING TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
