Olympique de Marseille had another summer of churn as they plotted a deep run into the UEFA Champions League, following the appointment of former Valencia boss Marcelino. However, Marseille were beaten in the third qualifying round of that competition by Greek Super League side Panathinaikos, losing on penalties at Stade Velodrome.
Their heavy summer of investment, though, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Iliman Ndiaye arriving, has led to an impressive start to the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign. L’OM remain unbeaten in their four matches so far with victories against Stade Reims and Stade Brest, as well as draws on the road, albeit in frustrating circumstances, against newly-promoted Metz as well as struggling Nantes.
TOULOUSE
With a smartly run football operation, led by former Liverpool director Damien Comolli, Toulouse have had an impressive recent rise. They gained promotion back to the top-flight of French football in 2022 and then finished in mid-table last season, whilst also going on to win the Coupe de France and, as a consequence, qualifying for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League for this season, whereby they will meet Liverpool.
They have started the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign with some fairly inconsistent and mediocre form as they, once again, sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table. They began with a 2-1 win away at Nantes, who they defeated in last season’s cup final, but have since picked up two points from three matches with draws against Paris Saint-Germain and Clermont, as well as a comfortable 2-0 loss away to Strasbourg.

Olympique de Marseille have adjusted well to the major shift in their tactics and philosophy in the last couple of years. From the attacking intensity of both Jorge Sampaoli and Igor Tudor to the more measured and pragmatic Marcelino, the disappointment of missing out on UEFA Champions League group stage football will take some getting over. They face a Toulouse side that, whilst generally well run, are not setting the world alight so far this season and Marseille, especially with their home advantage, are favourites for this one.
