It was another summer of fairly needless evolution and rejuvenation at Stade Velodrome with Olympique de Marseille moving on from Igor Tudor and appointing former Valencia manager, Marcelino. However, within a month of the campaign beginning, UEFA Champions League qualification elimination saw them appoint former Italy midfielder, Gennaro Gattuso.
The home team come into this on the back of a much-needed 3-1 win over AEK Athens in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League but their form in Ligue 1 has remained poor. The hosts have suffered three defeats in their last four matches as they drift down towards the bottom-half of the table.
LYON
Much like Marseille, it was a tumultuous summer at Olympique Lyonnais with their ten manager, Laurent Blanc, complaining about all things with John Textor under major pressure as their owner. Blanc asked to be sacked and after a very slow start to the season, the France FIFA World Cup winner was eventually let go.
Their results have not improved since then and they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom two and the automatic relegation places. In their opening nine matches of the 2023/24 campaign, Lyon have managed to collect just three points and they have suffered six defeats, scoring seven goals.

These two sides are both under pressure from their supporters for failing to live up to any expectation that has been set of them by their reputation and club size. Marseille were unbeaten in their opening five matches so three defeats in four games has seen the pressure mount on Gattuso. Lyon have managed to score just seven goals and are unlikely to be in a position to take the game to Marseille so the home team grinding out a victory appears most likely for this one.
