THE LOWDOWN
ARSENAL
Arsenal faced a tough challenge in their latest match against Manchester City, which was considered their biggest test to prove their title credentials. However, their performance did not inspire much confidence that they can keep up with the competition. Manchester City, who are reigning champions, dominated the game and gave Mikel Arteta a footballing lesson with a resounding 4-1 victory. Kevin De Bruyne scored twice, John Stones scored a header, and Erling Braut Haaland scored yet again to contribute to the comprehensive win.
Although Arsenal's travelling fans were able to celebrate a consolation goal scored by Rob Holding, their team's title hopes are no longer in their own hands. Manchester City's win over Fulham pushed Arsenal off their perch and into second place. However, there is a silver lining for Arsenal as Brighton & Hove Albion's loss to Nottingham Forest ensured their return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
While securing a top-four finish was the primary goal for Arteta and his team at the beginning of the season, there is a sense of dread among Arsenal fans that their team is once again 'bottling' the title. This is not entirely unfounded, given their draws with Liverpool, West Ham United, and Southampton, and their recent loss to Manchester City. Moreover, Arsenal have conceded 11 goals in their last four games and have scored and conceded in each of their last seven games.
Despite their recent struggles, the Gunners have an impressive home record this season, having scored in every game at the Emirates barring a match against Newcastle.
CHELSEA
As the weeks pass, Todd Boehly's decision to bring Frank Lampard back to Stamford Bridge is proving to be a mistake, as Chelsea's losing streak extends to five games, following their 2-0 defeat to West London rivals Brentford.
Cesar Azpilicueta's own goal in the 37th minute gave Brentford the lead, and Bryan Mbeumo scored a well-taken second for the Bees 12 minutes from time, as Chelsea's poor finishing once again cost them. This defeat sees Lampard's side sitting in 12th place in the Premier League table.
Crystal Palace's 4-3 victory over West Ham on Saturday means they leapfrogged Chelsea, who now find themselves just ten points above the relegation zone. It is hard to believe, but Chelsea are still at risk of being relegated to the Championship, and they are mathematically unable to challenge for a top-four finish.
While Chelsea's squad is reportedly excited about the prospect of Mauricio Pochettino being their new manager, Lampard is keen to avoid unwanted history at the Emirates, where defeat would see Chelsea suffer their 20th loss of the campaign for the first time in the Premier League era. Their last season with such a record was in 1987-88.
Chelsea have not won a game in their last eight matches since their 3-1 victory over Leicester City in March. They have only scored one goal since Lampard's return, which was Conor Gallagher's deflected strike against Brighton. In their last ten Premier League away games, they have only won one game.
Earlier this season, Arsenal defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, while Chelsea won 2-0 at the Emirates in August 2021, thanks to a Romelu Lukaku-inspired performance. THE PREDICTION
The mood in the Arsenal camp is bound to be low right now, as it appears recent results and performances have cost them the title. They have an opportunity to retake top spot in the Premier League table here though, at least temporarily, and Mikel Arteta will not have given up all hope just yet. Fortunately for them, they face a Chelsea side at an all-time low, with Frank Lampard failing to oversee any improvement since he was brought back into the club. There is a complete lack of cohesion in this Chelsea side right now, and despite recent setbacks, Arsenal can be favoured to take the three points here.
