THE LOWDOWN

Westerlo

Following promotion last season, Westerlo managed to comfortably finish inside the top eight and the European playoff spots. However, they have struggled since the 'split' in their last three games as they begin this weekend's round of fixtures sitting bottom of the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff group.

Their most recent outing was a 2-2 draw with Standard Liege in the reverse fixture between these two last weekend. It was a very dramatic encounter, though, with Standard cruising to a comfortable 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes of the 90 to go before two stoppage-time goals prevented a third successive defeat for Westerlo.

They have been very entertaining throughout the 2022/23 Jupiler Pro League campaign. Their 37 matches so far this season has consisted of 130 goals and that high-scoring form has continued since the split with their last three games having 16 goals in them.

Standard Liege

Under the management of former Celtic and NYCFC boss Ronny Deila, Standard Liege have had a much-improved campaign this time around, after finishing comfortably in the bottom-half last season. They have also started the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff group slowly, though.

Prior to their most recent outing, which was of course the aforementioned 2-2 draw with Westerlo, they shared a goalless draw with Cercle Brugge before a 2-1 loss at home to Gent, despite going down to ten men.

Whilst Westerlo's matches have consisted of more goals than the visitors', Standard Liege have still had 110 goals come in their 37 matches as they try and hunt down Gent at the top of the group.

THE PREDICTION

Unlike quite a few leagues on the continent, the Belgian Jupiler Pro League is often one of the most entertaining with a high-scoring theme that has been there for a few years now and both of these sides are representative of that. The two sides' sharing a 2-2 draw last weekend, in which there was plenty of drama with two goals coming after the 90th minute, is very much something that is expected to be a sign of things to come this weekend. This should be an entertaining encounter with both teams scoring seeming likely.
