Club Brugge
After winning the Jupiler Pro League last season, despite finishing second in the regular campaign, Club Brugge have endured a really difficult defence of their title. Carl Hoefkens led the club to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League but that was just a distraction from the generally poor performances and results.
The hosts are now onto their third manager of the 2022/23 campaign as Scott Parker’s short stint in charge was a failed one. Rik De Mil’s Blauw-Zwart are rock-bottom in the championship round group stages as they seem destined for UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.
They come into this on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Royal Antwerp in their most recent outing, last weekend, making it three successive defeats since the ‘split’ against the aforementioned Antwerp, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Genk. Those three matches have consisted of 15 goals.
Antwerp
Under the management of Mark van Bommel, Royal Antwerp have enjoyed an extremely impressive 2022/23 Jupiler Pro League campaign. After just a top eight finish last season, they are now challenging for the Belgian title for the first time since 1957.
They come into this, as mentioned, on the back of an impressive 3-2 defeat of Club Brugge, last weekend. The visitors have enjoyed three successive victories since ‘the split’ and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table, a point above Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the table.
They have been entertaining to watch throughout the season so far, with 66 goals scored but, more impressively, their defensive record is outstanding. The visitors have conceded just 29 goals in their 37 matches.
THE PREDICTION
These are two of the historically stronger sides in Belgian top-flight football and they both finished in the top four this season so they are both strong this time around but the home team are very much underperforming their general expectations. Home advantage may well help Club Brugge in this one but three successive defeats speaks volumes. To be sure, it could be worth hedging so a double chance bet in favour of the away team looks the way to go for this one.
