It is the last ever Merseyside Derby taking place at Goodison Park and it is fitting that the end of that era has David Moyes in charge of an improved Everton taking on league leaders Liverpool.

Everton Preview: Toffees improving

Following the re-appointment of David Moyes, Everton have massively improved as they push themselves away from the bottom three and the relegation places. The Toffees begin this rearranged clash now sitting nine points above the danger zone.

After a defeat to Aston Villa, Everton then enjoyed three successive victories against Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Hove Albion and Leicester City. They were most recently beaten 2-0 by AFC Bournemouth at Goodison Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Liverpool Preview: The quadruple dream is over

Much like their local rivals, Liverpool were also knocked out of the cup at the weekend. Arne Slot decided to name a heavily rotated side at Home Park and the Reds subsequently suffered a deserved 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, who sit rock-bottom in the Championship.

That loss came a few days after Liverpool’s 4-0 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur in the second-leg of their EFL Cup semi-final and they also finished top of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League with a chance to go nine points clear in the Premier League this week.

Everton Team News: A few injuries

Winter window signing Carlos Alcaraz made his Everton debut at the weekend against Bournemouth but remains unlikely to start this one. They have key attacking injuries as both Armando Broja and Dominic Calvert-Lewin remain sidelined for the hosts.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Young; Garner, Gueye; Lindstrom, Doucoure, Ndiaye; Beto

Unavailable: Coleman (Injured), Mangala (Injured), McNeil (Injured), Chermiti (Injured), Broja (Injured), Calvert-Lewin (Injured)

Questionable: Mykolenko (Injured)

Liverpool Team News: Gomez likely out

Joe Gomez had to be substituted early in that heavily rotated line-up against Plymouth due to injury and he is expected to be unavailable this week. Trent Alexander-Arnold is also unlikely to start with Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley expected to play at right-back.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Gakpo

Unavailable:

Questionable: Gomez (Injured), Alexander-Arnold (Injured)

Everton vs Liverpool Prediction

After desperately struggling for goals in the first-half of the campaign with Sean Dyche at the helm, Everton have scored seven goals in their last two home games in the league. They are likely to still take a more reactive and pragmatic approach into this one but will hope that Beto can cause the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk problems with runs in behind. However, their defensive competence even further limits an already limited home attack with the Reds likely to be able to grind out a victory at Goodison, amid what will be a hostile atmosphere.

Everton vs Liverpool Tip: Liverpool to win & under 3.5 goals
