Elena-Gabriela Ruse reached the second round of the French Open Singles for the first time in her career with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory over McCartney Kessler in the first round on Monday.

The Romanian did reach the semi-finals of the Doubles event last year, but has only once reached the third round in a Grand Slam Singles tournament, which came at the US Open last year.

Paula Badosa’s preparations for the French Open were hardly ideal given that she pulled out of both the Madrid Open and Italian Open, with her only clay-court tournament being the Internationaux de Strasbourg, where she played relatively little tennis.

However, the Spaniard – back into the top ten this year – made a significant statement in the first round by eliminating Naomi Osaka in three sets.
