Ecuador preview: Beaten late on

Having conceded just five goals in 18 CONMEBOL qualification games for FIFA World Cup 2026, Ecuador remained largely solid in their opening game against the Cote d’Ivoire – and they will be immensely frustrated to have begun with a slender defeat, having been tipped by many to be so-called ‘dark horses’ in North America this summer.

In the first half against Cote d’Ivoire, Ecuador had the better of an entertaining match, striking the crossbar on a couple of occasions, but their lack of real star quality in the final third eventually told before they were caught out on the counter-attack late on with Amad Diallo snatching a later winner for the Ivorians in Philadelphia.

Curacao preview: Famous moment in a heavy loss

Curacao are the smallest country to ever quality for a FIFA World Cup and, with Dick Advocaat at the helm of a squad whereby 25 of the 26 were born in the Netherlands, they will have believed they could be competitive in a strong Group E – and that appeared to be the case in their opener against Germany early on.

Having withstood an early bombardment against Die Mannschaft, only conceding one when it could have been many more, Curacao, via Livano Comenencia, then enjoyed a famous moment as they equalised against the four-time world champions before the first-half hydration break. The gulf in quality between the two did eventually show in the rest of the game as they succumbed to a 7-1 annihilation at the hands of the Germans.

Ecuador team news: Unlikely to change

The likes of Jordy Caicedo and Kendry Paez were doubtful ahead of Ecuador's opener but both made the squad, albeit neither of them came off the bench with Nilson Angulo and Kevin Rodriguez preferred alternatives to make an impact.

There is unlikely to be any changes made by Sebastian Beccacece with Ecuador performing quite well and according to plan, until the final moments. Pedro Vite played extremely well, too, as the surprise inclusion at left wing-back ahead of Pervis Estupinan.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Galindez; Ordonez, Pacho, Hincapie; Minda, Franco, Caicedo, Vite; Plata, E. Valencia, Yeboah

Curacao team news: Possible changes

Further team news will appear here closer to the match after pre-match press conferences...

Having gone with a back three in the build-up to the tournament, Curacao went with a back four in their opener and it would be a surprise for them to now shift away from that as they search for a point, at least.

Middlesbrough forward Sontje Hansen was replaced by Jeremy Antonisse at half-time, not to great effect. It could well be that Hansen retains his spot but the experienced Gervane Kastaneer is also pushing for a start alongside Kenji Gorre and Tyrese Noslin.

Predicted XI (4-1-2-1-2): Room; Floranus, Bazoer, Obispo, Fonville; L. Bacuna; J. Bacuna, Comenencia; Chong; Locadia, Kastaneer

  • Enner Valencia needs one goal to become the first player to reach the landmark of 50 senior international goals for Ecuador.
  • Ecuador’s 0-1 defeat against Cote d'Ivoire ended a 19-match unbeaten run stretching back to a defeat against Brazil in World Cup qualifying in September 2024.
  • Livano Comenencia, Curacao’s youngest player at the 2026 finals, made history by becoming their first goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup when he found the net against Germany at the age of 22 years and 131 days.

Ecuador vs Curacao prediction

A naturally conservative manager throughout his managerial career, Dick Advocaat did manage to get Curacao into positions of promise, aside from their goal, against an open Germany side that allowed a lot of space when in transition. While they now come up against a lower calibre of attacking quality in Ecuador, the South Americans will now allow for that.

Ecuador lack a cutting edge. Enner Valencia scored just short of 50% of their 14 qualifying goals, in 18 games, and that shows their limitations in the final third. That said, they are extremely solid and were very close to yet another clean sheet last week. They will want to put that right with a shutout here and, despite labouring in the final third in terms of quality despite a surprising intent, they should get a crucial three points in their second game of the tournament here.
