In the build-up to FIFA World Cup 2026 in USA, Canada and Mexico, we shine a spotlight on Ecuador.

FIFA World Ranking: 23

Confederation: CONMEBOL

Who is Ecuador’s head coach for FIFA World Cup 2026?

Head coach of Ecuador for FIFA World Cup 2026 is Sebastian Beccacece. The former Chile and Argentina assistant coach, a disciple of Jorge Sampaoli, took charge of Ecuador in August 2024.

Who is Ecuador’s captain for FIFA World Cup 2026?

Ecuador’s captain at FIFA World Cup 2026 is 36-year-old former West Ham United striker Enner Valencia, who is playing at his third global tournament after making his debut in 2012.

How many times have Ecuador participated in a FIFA World Cup before 2026?

4 – 2002, 2006, 2014, 2022

What is Ecuador’s best performance at a FIFA World Cup?

Round of 16 – 2006

How did Ecuador qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026?

Ecuador began CONMEBOL qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026 with a three-point deduction but despite that, they managed to finish second in the ten-team table, only behind world and double South American champions Argentina, doing so with a remarkable defensive record.

The Ecuadorians were the only team to concede fewer than double digits and they also lost the fewest games with just five conceded and two defeats as they obdurately marched to qualification, which was secured on June 10, 2025 with a 0-0 draw against Peru.

Enner Valencia starred in attack with six goals; only two behind eventual top scorer Lionel Messi, with the extremely impressive defence of the Ecuadorians something that should be noted ahead of this summer. Only Argentina and Brazil, both with home advantage, could beat Ecuador – both by a goal to nil.

Who are Ecuador’s star players?

Naturally, with a record like that, despite the generally proactive style of Beccacece, the defence of Ecuador is where the stars can be found and there certainly are some.

Centre-back and 2024-25 UEFA Champions League winner Willian Pacho (Paris Saint-Germain) is perhaps the best known alongside versatile defender Piero Hincapie (Arsenal) and flying full-back Pervis Estupinan (AC Milan). Pacho and Hincapie faced off in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League final prior to FIFA World Cup 2026.

They are also shielded by perhaps their best-known player altogether and someone who is of the elite level in Moises Caicedo (Chelsea), who has once again been excellent for the Blues this year.

Further forward, alongside Enner Valencia (Pachuca), 19-year-old attacking midfielder Kendry Paez (River Plate) will be worth keeping an eye on, while Gonzalo Plata (Flamengo) and Kevin Rodriguez (Royale Union Saint-Gilloise) could be real points of difference, too.

Expert prediction for Ecuador’s chances at FIFA World Cup 2026

Being so difficult to beat will stand Ecuador in good stead and FIFA World Cup 2026 being in the Americas will likely benefit South American sides such as them due to an added familiarity with conditions.

Even with a limited attacking output, they should find their way past Curacao and, despite some quality, the Cote d’Ivoire attack may not have enough to break Ecuador’s solid back-line down.

The key clash will be the final group game against Germany when both sides could already be guaranteed a place in the knockout stage and there is a chance of rotation among the two teams, which adds a layer of mystery when it comes to the final result.

Either way, Ecuador should get through the group and their record indicates they should have more than enough to make it through a round of 32 tie which sees the runners-up of Group E face the runners-up of Group I – a group that boasts France, Senegal, Iraq and Norway. Alternately, the Group E winner, which Ecuador could well be, will take on a third placed side.

Eventually, though, an over reliance on the now ageing Enner Valencia will likely catch up with them and whether or not they go too much deeper is questionable.

What round will Ecuador reach at FIFA World Cup 2026? Round of 16
