Dominican Republic vs Venezuela prediction
A packed crowd in Miami is expected for this top of the table Pool D showdown between two 3-0 teams laced with MLB stars. Whilst Dominican Republic are making headlines and striking fear into opponents due to their deep batting line-up, Venezuela boast more than enough power to throw some punches right back at them. Their most recent game against Nicaragua saw Venezuela lead off with Ronald Acuna Jr as usual, then following him up with Jackson Chourio, who is back fit following a hand injury. That’s before you take into account the likes of William Contreras, Wilyer Abreu and Eugenio Suarez lower down the order. Don’t forget about new San Francisco Giants signing Luis Arraez either, who is having a fantastic tournament.
We know all about the Dominican Republic’s penchant for runs with them having racked up double-figures against all three of their Pool D opponents so far, accumulating 34 runs in total which as at the time of writing is matched only by defending WBC champions Japan. But what may go under the radar is the starting pitcher they are sending out to face this Venezuelan offense. Sandy Alcantara is a former CY Young Award winner, experienced and contains the pitching mix required to take on such a dangerous array of hitters.
Venezuela are starting with lefty Eduardo Rodriguez of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who has an ERA of 4.19 across his regular season career. Like Alcantara, Rodriguez has plenty of experience at the highest level to call upon but without having ever hit the heights of his opposite number. Rodriguez is more likely to break vs this Dominican Republic line-up than Alcantara is against Venezuela. Either way though, we could be in for a high-scoring match-up.
Whilst both nations have given up just five runs, Venezuela’s tally of 21 runs is 13 lower than their opponents, who contain that extra slug and general home run power, which goes a long way in matches such as this. When taking this into account, backing the Dominican Republic has to be favoured along with over 8.5 total runs being scored.
Dominican Republic vs Venezuela tip: Dominican Republic to win and over 8.5 total runs
