USA vs Dominican Republic prediction
This has all the makings of a battle for the ages and is the sort of match-up that everyone within baseball dreamed of when the WBC was created. A heavyweight clash between USA and the Dominican Republic with a place in the final at stake. Not to mention the ultimate duel between starting pitcher and batters as Paul Skenes, the 2025 National League CY Young award winner takes to the mound for the biggest start of his career against the best offense in the tournament full to the brim with some of the best hitters in all of baseball.
Skenes is coming off the back of a brilliant showing against Mexico in pool play, his World Baseball Classic debut which saw the former LSU star strike out seven and allow just one hit across four innings. But as incredible as Skenes has been since turning professional, this will be the biggest challenge he’s ever faced with Team DR boasting quality bats from one through nine, whether it be Juan Soto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, or Junior Caminero to name just three. However, none of those three have ever registered a hit against Skenes in MLB with starting Dominican Republic shortstop Geraldo Perdomo 0-7 vs the Pittsburgh Pirates phenom.
Key for the Dominican Republic will be running the bases hard, taking their walks when possible and building up Skenes’ pitch count, so even if they aren’t able to tag him for multiple runs, they at least get him out of the game early before going to work on the USA bullpen.
However, one can’t help but feel that this match won’t be decided by the performance of Skenes, rather the performance of Team USA’s batters. They’ve been largely carried by the bottom of the order whilst the likes of Bryce Harper and Cal Raleigh continue to slump. Whilst the latter can be replaced by Will Smith, Harper is too important to this USA line-up to stay quiet and he simply must produce at the plate in Miami. Especially against Dominican Republic starter Luis Severino, who whilst a decent big league veteran, isn't close to the level of Skenes.
It's fair to say that Mark DeRosa’s side have been far from the juggernaut they were tipped to be when considering the players at his disposal. The pitching has been largely good but the batting just hasn’t been as destructive as expected, unlike the Dominican Republic, who’ve been everything that was advertised. However, they are still in the race after a narrow win over Canada and it would be foolish to write them off, especially after seeing how Mason Miller slammed the door on the Canadians. If USA hold a lead going into the ninth, there’s no better pitcher to close it out.
Although Skenes gets the ball to start, the USA have given up more home runs than any side remaining in the competition and that doesn’t bode well against the nation who has hit by far the most. Confidence within Team DR's camp remains extremely high after mercy ruling Korea Republic with a 10-0 lead in the seventh inning and at their best, no pitcher can contain them.
In what could prove a showdown for the ages, it’s too difficult to go against Dominican Republic. They’ve played the best baseball across the tournament so far and should have the crowd on their side. Backing them at what is good value feels like the smart move.
